Naturally beautiful gemstone!

Nature's rainbow! A large, beautiful raw gemstone! A true collector's item!

This rare gemstone is an Ethiopian Opal, mined in the Welo region of Ethiopia. This opal weighs 90.5 grams (452 carats) and has dimensions of 76 x 35 x 32 millimeters (3.0 x 1.4 x 1.3 inches).
This piece contains a spectacular color shimmer of green, blue, and red flashes. There is some matrix attached.

Opals are an October birthstone as well as the gemstone for the 24th wedding anniversary. Metaphysically, Ethiopian opals are said to use water energy, the energy of stillness, quiet strength, and purification, stimulating all metaphysical gifts. Ethiopian opal are joy-filled gems.

Opals are a very rare gemstone which have a chemical formula of SiO2nH2O. Opal's chemical formula contains water molecules. These Ethiopian opals are hydrophane. They have a high water content - up to 20%. Drying quickly will cause uneven pressure across the stone and cracking. Also drying will lose some of the transparency-translucency. As such, it is recommended that opals are kept in water. Welo opals are natural gemstones and can fracture if dried unevenly. There may be naturally occurring cracks in this specimen. Opals are sensitive to temperature changes and extremes.

If you choose to dry it out, place it in a new zip-top bag, seal it, then let it sit for 6 months to a year or more in a place that temperature controlled and not subject to temperature extremes. Make sure the opal is in a location where it will not get dropped, or jostled and do not place anything on top of it. This will minimize cracking. Be advised that by drying, opals will most likely become more opaque. There may be other ways to safely dry the opal.

We will ship the specimen wet. We are not responsible for any fracturing or cracking or other damage due to improper care.

Photos were taken outside to capture the opal's flashes. Opals will not show as much flash in lower light situations.
